I genuinely thought Deafheaven's 2015 record New Bermuda was about as heavy as they were ever going to get, and 2018's Ordinary Corrupt Human Love seemed to prove that right. Now Deafheaven has released a new song called "Black Brick" and it pretty much blows New Bermuda right out of the water. It's almost as if Deafheaven sought out to prove that yes, they could do a thrashy, early metalcore version of black metal and not only completely crush it, but make you want more immediately.
"Black Brick" rules and I hope they play it on their tour with Baroness and Zeal & Ardor. Here's hoping Deafheaven recorded more than just this when they were recently in the studio.
