MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine Says Being Bullied Is What Made Him Start Playing Guitar

One of us! One of us!

One of us! One of us!

This is one of those rare times where Dave Mustaine says something and I can actually agree with him 100%. Then again, when he started distancing himself from Megadeth's 2013 turd disc Supercollider recently, I felt like we were on the same page too… so maybe we're destined to become buds or something? Anyway! Mustaine revealed in a recent interview with Seymour Duncan Pickups (below) that he snagged a guitar because he was sick of getting made fun of:

“It’s kind of like having someone slam your hand in the door of a car. You can either sit there and do nothing and accept the pain or you can open the door and go after and kick that guy’s ass. That’s basically what motivated me to play the guitar … There was a lot of things in my life I didn’t like. I was getting picked on as a kid and was able to express myself through the guitar. When you’re 13 and you’re strawberry blonde and you’re skinny and freckle-faced and you’re going to a school where everybody is surfers, you get picked on.”

Sounds about right. I'd venture to say half the kids who pick up an instrument are doing it just to fit in. That or attract the opposite sex, which Mustaine also admits to:

“I had gone to a bunch of keg parties. There was people playing there and I was like, ‘Wow, everybody loves these guys because he’s got a guitar.’ And that’s when I started playing. I was 13.”

Dave Mustaine is just like the rest of us! At least he is in that regard. Maybe not so much when it comes to all the political stuff that I'm not even going to touch here.
