Welcome to Writer's Bloc, the brand new series on Metal Injection where artists pick their favorite song from their brand new record and talk a little about it! For this first installment, we've got Brat guitarist Brenner Moate talking about his favorite cut from Brat's new record Social Grace, out today. Check out Moate's answers below and get Social Grace here. You can also check out the entirety of the Writer's Bloc series here.

What is your favorite song from Social Grace?

"I kinda feel like none of us would or could agree on a single collective favorite, so I'll answer these questions from my own perspective. My favorite song would probably be 'Hesitation Wound'."

Why is it your favorite?

"Out of the songs we've played live off of the album, this one might be the most fun for me. The opening might be the most exciting riff for me to play out of all of the songs, with all the tempo changes in the song keeping my playing at full attention and fully present. Sort of one of those things where if you lose focus for just a second, you'll fuck up. I tend to enjoy things like that. It also encompasses pretty much everything we love genre-wise in 97 seconds."

Why was it a single?

"It's a single for the aforementioned reason that it covers everything that Brat is in a very concise package. It opens with a slightly noodly death metal sounding guitar riff, which goes into a kinda thrashy, kinda hardcore 2-step verse. Cutting the song in half is a quick grind section, followed by some feedback, into the moshy breakdown at the end.

"All the while, the overarching structure of the song comes off true to powerviolence, with no one part lasting too long, rapid transitions aplenty, and no sections that come back around. This is everything that we love and everything that we are, so we felt this was a great song to listen to if you were going to listen to just one Brat song."
