Nerdy as it may sound, I'm a huge fan of metal documentaries. So when I went searching for a cool documentary that I hadn't seen yet, I stumbled on this great video about Napalm Death's Scum, put together by Earache Records.
In many ways, the band's debut LP (and it's blistering follow-up, From Enslavement to Obliteration) set the foundation for what we now know as Grindcore. Napalm Death, along with other bands like Extreme Noise Terror took extreme music to a level it had never traveled to before, creating an influential sound we now have the luxury to take for granted.
In the video, ex-drummer Mick Harris acts as our tour guide through the band's early history: their emergence out of the punk scene, the development of their sound, and of course the dizzying line-up changes. There's also an interesting discussion about how the feel of the album changes once you hit the mid-way point from a more break-neck speed punk sound, to a muddier and more metallic approach with the addition of guitarist Bill Steer.
