2014 marks the 30th year that notorious black metal scourge Mayhem have defiled the planet with their continued existence. To celebrate, the band is polluting the musical landscape with a fifth album's worth of unrelenting grimness called Esoteric Warfare. Set for release internationally on May 23rd and in North America on May 27th, the album is the first taste of new Mayhem since 2009's Ordo ad Chao.

Esoteric Warfare is being released by Season of Mist Records and the band and label are going all out for this LP. The album will be available on multiple CD and vinyl configurations, including a collector's vinyl box set, as well as a cassette version. There's also going to be a 7" vinyl single released featuring the track "Psywar" as well as a previously unreleased track not available on Esoteric Warfare called "From Beyond Event Horizon." The single will feature two different covers in order to drive collectors insane, also.
You can pre-order the "Psywar" EP through Season of Mist right now, and pre-orders for the full album should become available in the weeks ahead. Mayhem will also tour Europe in support of Esoteric Warfare throughout the month of May. There haven't been any U.S. dates announced yet, but the band's North American fans should still keep their fingers crossed just in case.
