Having recently completed the touring cycle for 2014's Once More 'Round The Sun, it seems like Mastodon is about due to start writing a new record. And wouldn't you know it, that's exactly what's happening!
Guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor spoke with Live Nation TV and noted that they are about to hit the jam space to write a new album:
“With a new record looming—we’re about to go into writing, I just want to be able to do something different and not be stagnant with my playing. Every new album is another opportunity to ‘do more better’—cause we ‘should do more better, shouldn’t we?’ [laughs].”
The band also got into their writing process a bit:
"We play something for the first time and get the hairs on the back of the neck standing up. That's how you know," explains Brann Dailor, drummer for the heavy metal band Mastodon. "You know if it's good."
"Back then we write a bunch of riffs in a row and just say, 'That sounds cool!'" explains Kelliher. "Now we're starting to focus more on the balance between vocals and just instrumentation. It's a natural progression."
So, perhaps we can expect a new album next year? I think that'd be fair. Hopefully, guitarist Brent Hinds will have time to finish that Giraffe Tongue Orchestra project he's been working on with Ben from Dillinger Escape Plan. Here's the full interview:
