This week’s new heavy metal releases include lots of atmosphere, catchy metal, and more! To the metals…

ALSO! Today, Bandcamp is doing their monthly day of giving 100% of what you pay directly to the labels and artists as Covid-19 Pandemic relief. So if you can get stuff from Bandcamp, please do.

Aduanten – Sullen Cadence EP

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Atmospheric death metal
Origin: Austin, Texas
Label: Eihwaz

Buy now on Bandcamp

Starting this week with some pretty rad atmospheric metal. This is moody stuff that has some Insomnium and Katatonia vibes to it. This EP features guest spots from members of Obsequiae, Panopticon, and Horrendous, which give the listener a more dynamic experience over the four tracks.

Artillery – X

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Thrash
Origin: Copenhagen, Denmark
Label: Metal Blade

Sample and buy now on Bandcamp

Let's thrash about with some legends of the scene with X. On their tenth record Artillery are dropping some hefty, epic metal that features all you'd want from an outfit of this sort and age. This includes a thrash song about thrash, which we frankly don't get enough these days.

Book of Wyrms – Occult New Age

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Psychedelic/doom metal
Origin: Richmond, Virginia
Label: Desert Records

Sample and buy now on Bandcamp

Now for some hippie doom. Occult New Age is a collection of slow, spacy jams that would appeal to fans of Hawkwind, Elder, and any number of other nerdy stoner bands. A solid balance of riffage and synth tickling here.

Ghost Iris – Comatose

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Metalcore/djent
Origin: København, Denmark
Label: Long Branch

Buy now on Bandcamp

If you're looking for some chunky metalcore with breakdowns and melody, then Comatose is the album for you this week. This has grooves, soaring choruses, and a guest spot from Chimaira's Mark Hunter. If you dug the most recent Erra record, you'll likely enjoy this as well.

Kataan – Kataan EP

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Atmospheric death/black metal
Origin: Plaistow, New Hampshire
Label: Prosthetic

Buy now on Bandcamp

Kataan is a new duo made up of Astronoid's Brett Boland and ex-Vattnet (Viskar)'s Nicholas Thornbury. Like their other musical outings this features lots of reverb, blast beats, and massive crescendos. It's darker than I expected from the duo, but I'm not mad about it. A solid introduction.

Moon Coven – Slumber Wood

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Psychedelic/stoner
Origin: Malmö, Sweden
Label: Ripple

Buy now on Bandcamp

If you enjoyed Book of Wyrms, why not keep that party going with Moon Coven. These guys appear to utilize three guitars which explains why there's just so much fuzz. Beautiful, hypnotizing harmonies throughout too. This is a good one to throw on and get lost in.

Seth – La Morsure du Christ

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Black metal
Origin: Bordeaux, France
Label: Season Of Mist/LADLO

Buy now on Bandcamp

It's been eight years since this outfit unleashed their black metal fury on the world. This time they're back with three new-ish members, one of which is Saint Vincent (no, not THAT St. Vincent, but wouldn't that be weird?). This is apparently a sequel of sorts to their debut record Les blessures de l'âme, so if you had unanswered questions back in 1998, they might finally be answered here.

Skarlett Riot – Invicta

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From GHOST IRIS, KATAAN, and More Out Today – 5/7

Genre: Hard rock/metalcore
Origin: Scunthorpe, England
Label: Despotz

Buy now on Bandcamp

If you've enjoyed recent-ish In Flames or early In This Moment give Skarlett Riot a go. This is catchy as well modern metal that I could see doing well at your Louder Than Life or Aftershock festival.
