This week's new heavy metal releases include sludgy death metal, big ol' metalcore choruses (metalchoruses?), progressive atmospheric blackened post-deathcore (?), and more! To the metals…
Emberthrone – Godless Wonder
Genre: Sacramento, California
Origin: Technical death metal
Label: Seek And Strike
Stream here
Emberthrone has quite the line up. It features Monte Barnard (ex-Alterbeast), Martin Bianchini (Dance Gavin Dance session guitarist), Quentin Garcia (Man on the Moon), and Gabe Seeber (Decrepit Birth). Together they're bringing some technical heaviness. Oodles of aggression here.
Billy Howerdel – What Normal Was
Genre: Experimental/progressive
Origin:New Jersey
Label: Alchemy/Rise
The A Perfect Circle guy isn't about to sit around for years and years waiting for his bandmates again, so Billy Howerdel is setting out on his own. Fans of APC will be pleased to hear that Billy's solo stuff sounds a lot like APC. You're getting spacy, gloomy, progressive rock here.
Kardashev – Liminal Rite
Genre: Atmospheric deathcore/post-metal
Origin: Tempe, Arizona
Label: Metal Blade
Liminal Rite is an album unlike any I've heard before. Kardashev combine familiar elements in an unfamiliar way and really the only band than comes close to this is Ne Obliviscaris, but these guys embrace Ocean-like slow passages more. This record is fucking sick.
Kreator – Hate Über Alles
Genre: Thrash
Origin: Essen, Germany
Label: Nuclear Blast
Thrash OG's have taken half a decade since their last record, and they came back pissed. They're also back with new bassist Frédéric Leclercq (Sinsaenum, ex-DragonForce). As you'd hope and expect, this is non-stop, high energy guitar theatrics and hard hitting thrash percussion. Kevin has a full review here.
Motionless In White – Scoring The End Of The World
Genre: Metalcore/industrial
Origin: Scranton, Pennsylvania
Label: Roadrunner
Sometimes you just want some angsty, melodic, metal and Scoring The End Of The World scratches that itch. If you're not into grand metalcore with some beeps and boops, keep moving. However if you are, this is a success on that front. It also includes guest spots from Bryan form Knocked Loose, Caleb from Beartooth, Lindsay Schoolcraft, and composer Mick Gordon (Doom, Wolfenstein, etc).
Yatra – Born Into Chaos
Genre: Sludge/doom
Origin: Ocean City, Maryland
Label: Prosthetic
Taking us home we have some nastiness from Yatra. Born Into Chaos is the perfect blend of death metal bursts and sludgy headbang-able parts. It's disjointed in a way that works really well and makes it exciting start to finish.
