THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From FAITH NO MORE, SECRETS OF THE SKY, COAL CHAMBER and More Out Today – 5/19

Pretty solid week this week. New releases from a couple reunited bands, some grimness, some grimy, some prog, and more! To the metals…

Coal Chamber – Rivals81A7Y+Mt78L._SL1500_

Genre: Nu metal
Origin: Los Angeles, California
Label: Napalm

Buy now on Amazon.com

Not really sure what inspired the nu metal revival that's been sorta going on lately, but Coal Chamber are dropping a record just in time. Sounds just like 2001. Groovy and heavy like they're supposed to be. You can almost hear the over-sized cargo pants rustling in the recording.

Drudkh – A Furrow Cut Short61t2OcPUG3L

Genre: Black metal
Origin: Kharkiv, Ukraine
Label: Season Of Mist

Buy now on Amazon.com

Drudkh have really grown on me over the last few records. Nothing profoundly new on each release, but they're solid throughout. Equal parts grim black metal and melodic atmosphere for a pleasant juxtaposition.

Faith No More – Sol InvictusFNM_front

Genre: Alternative metal
Origin: San Francisco, California
Label: Reclamation / Ipecac

Buy now on Amazon.com

I'm sure at this point that anyone that wants to hear this has and loves it or is bored by it. FNM are one of my all time favorites and I dig it. Sounds like the logical step after Album of the Year. The band is pretty timeless and unique and this feels very natural, rather than them trying to be who they were.

King Parrot – Dead Set81sls8bZO4L._SL1500_

Genre: Thrash/grindcore
Origin: Melbourne, Australia
Label: Agonia / Housecore

Buy now on Amazon.com

Grimy music from grimy dudes. Really dark sounding without being black metal. Little unsettling. I respect this. No surprise that their video features the longest peeing scene in any music video that I've seen.

Secrets Of The Sky – Pathway611AGYQd3ZL

Genre: Sludge
Origin: Oakland, California
Label: Metal Blad

Buy now on Amazon.com

A tremendous evolution from their first record To Sail Black Waters. This one is more diverse, more melodic, heavier, and prettier. I highly recommend this to fans of post metal, sludge, and the likes. I saw them last Monday, and these songs are crushing live too.

TesseracT – Odyssey/Scala DVD/CD71xZ19MY7uL._SL1500_

Genre: Djent/Progressive
Origin: Milton Keynes, England
Label: Century Media

Buy now on Amazon.com

This band has been a revolving door of vocalists for their entire existence. They've had more singers than albums. Their first guy, Daniel Tompkins, is back and before they drop some new stuff with him they're reminding you why you loved him in the first place as they tear though stuff from One and showing you why you won't miss the last guy as Tompkins does his take on stuff from Altered States. This sorta restored my faith in this band.

Valkyrie – Shadows91tvitaqmJL._SL1500_

Genre: Doom/Stoner
Origin: Harrisonburg, Virginia
Label: Relapse

Buy now on Amazon.com

A catchy blues-based stoner band that will infect your brain and keep you coming back for more. Features a dude from Baroness, but sounds nothing like them. They sound closer to The Sword or Pentagram.

Weedeater – Goliathan61Xo3uEa98L

Genre: Stoner
Origin: Wilmington, North Carolina
Label: Season of Mist

Buy now on Amazon.com

This band sounds like fuzz and marijuana. Simple as that.
