Album Review: IMPLORE Subjugate

I was surprised when I saw that Implore signed to Century Media. I had heard Depopulation shortly after it dropped in 2015 and thought it was damn good, don’t get me wrong. The jump to a major label was sudden though. But hey, good. It’s awesome to see bands like this getting some bigger recognition. I’m wondering how many heads Implore can manage to turn though. The German quartet is no slouch when it comes to aggressive tunes.

Implore is kind of like a “best of” when it comes to their sound. Every cut of every genre they incorporate is done excellently. Their death metal, grindcore and crust elements are a caustic cocktail. And sure enough, the first track, “Birth of an Era” gives us a little bit of everything they’re capable of: a grindcore drive, some death metal groove and an over-current of crust (the sound is always filthy).

Throughout fourteen-tracks, Implore keeps the rage coming. Pieces like “Loathe” are pure grind madness. The track goes from blasting to blasting harder. Closer “Gazing Beyond” is a savage blend of death metal and grind that sends the album off on a burner. Tracks never overstay their welcome and Implore sticks to a no-nonsense clause. At thirty-four-minutes everything clocks in around what you’d expect: roughly three-minute songs, no filler.

There are some slower moments that stick to heavier stuff. “Ecocide” is a crusty instrumental that sounds like something off of a Tragedy or From Ashes Rise album. “Paradox” has some slower, melodic moments but never stays down for long. Or at least, slower for Implore.

Where the divide of Subjugate is going to lay is in how much you want more music like this. How much more crusty/grindy death metal do you want? Implore’s writing is strong but not varied. They play within genres and they do it well. But if you walk into this ready for some new, genre defying sound, you may as well turn back now. But if you’re like me, well, I’m a junky for grindy stuff and Subjugate serves up plenty of it.

Subjugate is a strong release for Implore. Great blasts, hooks and enough of a mix-up song to song that the album never feels same-y. Those in need of a good, aggressive fix are going to get that through and through. It’s a furious thirty-four-minutes that makes me curious what the future holds for Implore. These guys got the chemistry to make something that can really snap some necks. Watch out, and until then spin this monster.

Score: 8/10
