Australia takes AC/DC being from their country very, very seriously. In the most recent batch of Australian-based AC/DC love, the country's own government has issued 30,000 brand new AC/DC coins in honor of the band turning 45.
The Royal Australian Mint even worked with The Questacon National Science and Technology Centre to strike 10 of the coins with 3,500,000 volts of electricity using a Tesla coil, which they're marketing as being "Thunderstruck." Which is a song title I never quite got – who gets struck by thunder?
Anyway, here's what Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Ross MacDiarmid had to say.
“AC/DC is famous for their electrifying energy. It’s in their music, the titles of some of their songs, even their insignia. We weren’t sure what effect the lightning would have on the coins, but we discovered that because the coins are such excellent conductors of electricity, the lightning’s mark is only visible under magnification.”
You can't buy one of the 10 coins, either. You have to buy a coin and hope you get one of the 10, which will be marked as such. Attempt to buy one of the coins here. Oh, and did we mention there might be a new AC/DC record coming out soon with vocalist Brian Johnson back behind the microphone and Phil Rudd behind the kit? Because that absolutely might be happening, if the photos are to be believed.
