Top 10 Lars Ulrich Drumming Moments. Yeah, That's Right…

Take a look at the Metallica drummer's finest performances. Seriously.

2) The snare fill in “Sad but True” is iconic and was a game changer for metal. Fuck. Yeah. You can even not like the Black Album or maybe have never even heard it, but you know that snare fill.

3) The “Lars Ulrich” whole-beat, 4/4 bass drumming in the middle of “Blackened” is another one of those hidden gems indicative of his ability to throw in little bursts of studied technique while still maintaining the pulse of a song, even one with the complex accentuation of “Blackened.”

4) The backbeat on all of Load is almost Bonham-worthy. Especially “Outlaw Torn.”

5) In Master of Puppets’ title track, his tasty accents in the main riff and pre-chorus, as well as the peppy kick pattern added to the rock beat of the chorus itself, contrasts with the riffs themselves as well as the theme and tone of the song. Not enough gets said about Lars’ ability to add texture and nuance to a song from his position behind the kit. Seriously, a little bit of flash here or a decision to remain in the pocket (even if he does waver here-and-there, see Kill ‘em All) can throw the mood from one end of the spectrum to another and you probably didn’t even realise it. Guitar riffs aren’t solely responsible for the feel of a song, y’know.
