NIN's TRENT REZNOR Says Music Has Become Formulaic, "Vegan Restaurant Patron-Type Shit"

"I see a lot of people making formulaic, made-to-please, vegan restaurant patron-type shit."

Trent Reznor has made some incredibly out-of-left-field, frankly revolutionary music during his career, and he's not a fan of what the Internet is doing to creative minds. In an interview with Yahoo, Reznor says he feels as though the Internet is giving everyone a voice, which has "created a toxic environment for artists and led to some very safe music."

More specifically, he feels like the majority of artists out there are just making music that's formulaic for the sake of please everyone else.

"Artists are trying to make music to please the tastemakers that tell the sheep what to like. It’s a vicious cycle and I think it’s unhealthy. I don’t see any Princes emerging on the scene today. I see a lot of people making formulaic, made to please, vegan restaurant patron-type shit. And I think it creates an environment where people are too fuckin’ worried about what other people have to say. And people who have never made anything think it’s OK to talk shit about stuff they have no right to talk about. You got a Facebook account? Nobody gives a fuck. You haven’t achieved anything."

I think on the flip side of that, artists should probably give a shit less about what some dickhead on Facebook (or reviewer, etc.) has to say about their art. Ultimately, if it makes them happy, then what's the big deal if everyone else hates it or doesn't get it?
