MESHUGGAH's TOMAS HAAKE On IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT's Drummer: "We All Wish We Could Play Like Him"

Plus the dude from C.B. Murdoc.

Tomas Haake

Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake is easily one of the greatest and most unique drummers in all of metal. But who impresses him? In an interview with Metal Injection, Haake cites both Imperial Triumphant drummer Kenny Grohowski and C.B. Murdoc drummer Carl-Gustaf Bäckström as the two that really blow his mind. Or in his own words about Grohowski, "What the hell?"

"[Myself and interviewer Frank Godla] have a mutual friend that is one of the most insane drummers I've ever seen – Kenny Grohowski that plays with Imperial Triumphant among other bands. What the hell? I mean, we all wish we could play like Kenny. None of us can. Then you have… Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo who I mentioned before, Mario [Duplantier] from Gojira – excellent drummer, fun to watch, very animated, and hits the drums like there's no tomorrow. It's impossible for me to name one guy.

"We have a tremendous drummer here in Sweden with a band that supported us for a tour. The band is called C.B. Murdoc. Carl-Gustaf Bäckström, the drummer of that band, I would say he's the Kenny Grohowski of Stockholm as far as metal goes. He's also one that's a mind-blowing drummer. But there's too many and I cannot single one out."

It's also worth noting that you can hear Bäckström in his other longtime band Mörk Gryning, and Grohowski playing live with Artificial Brain lately as well. Check out the full interview below and check out the Metal Injection YouTube channel here!
