The story behind one of Lamb Of God's new songs involves gorillas gettin' it on at the zoo and trying to start a hardcore band.
In an interview with Spencer Kaufman of Heavy Consequence, Lamb Of God vocalist Randy Blythe reveals "Grayscale" was originally penned for a side project he and bandmate Willie Adler wanted to start called Gorilla Dick. The song ultimately made it onto the new Lamb Of God record Omens after producer Josh Wilbur heard it, but that wasn't always the plan.
"That song, originally… Willie and I, a while ago came up with the idea for the greatest name for a hardcore band ever – Gorilla Dick," said Blythe as transcribed by Metal Injection. "[There was a story in the news at the time where there] was two gorillas in a zoo in like, San Diego I think – a male and a female gorilla – and the male gorilla started pleasuring the female gorilla with his mouth and all these people are watching [totally shocked]. I was like 'yeah, that gorilla knows what's up. He's gonna get a gorilla blowjob later because he's handling his business and taking care of his lady first.' Hint hint, dudes.
"So Willie was like 'yeah, he's gonna get his gorilla dick sucked later.' Then we started thinking about it [and] and we were like 'gorilla dick. That's got to be the most evil dick in the world because a gorilla will rip you to pieces right?' So we're like, that's the perfect name for a hardcore band. Gorilla Dick. Then we come find out the gorillas ave little tiny dicks. Like, one inch long. Which makes it even better. So Willie decided he was going to write that song for our Gorilla Dick project."
Oh, and don't worry – Blythe promises there will be a Gorilla Dick record at some point. "We are going to do eventually a Gorilla Dick album," he said. "So watch out."
