JOE DUPLANTIER Jokes He "Possibly Ripped Off MASTODON Unconsciously" On Fortitude Artwork

Even he was suspicious at first.

Gojira released their latest record Fortitude in 2021 and some fans had a few questions about the artwork. Namely whether or not cover artist and band frontman Joe Duplantier ripped off the figure on Mastodon's 2017 album Emperor Of Sand. In an interview with Resurrection Fest, Duplantier settles the score once and for all.

"I gotta say this – it's possible that we ripped off Mastodon unconsciously," he said with a laugh. "I did the cover and I remember I was really [into] the idea of the Knights of the Round Table and the indigenous culture, and I wanted to do a mix of that. Then after the album was released, I saw a comment of somebody comparing [them] and I'm like, 'that's bullshit!' Then I took the Mastodon cover and our cover and I'm like, 'it does look similar. It's true.' It's not the first time it happened – the whale [too]."

"The whale" Duplantier is referring to is the cover for Mastodon's 2004 album Leviathan and Gojira's 2005 album From Mars To Sirius, both of which feature whales. And that's really what these "similarities" boil down to – Emperor Of Sand and Fortitude have a figure standing in the center holding a staff of some sort, and Leviathan and From Mars To Sirius have whales. They're not exactly carbon copies of one another.
