GOJIRA's Joe Duplantier Talks Eventual Retirement, Future Sound Of The Band

"Maybe we're going to go back in time and sound more like Led Zeppelin, in the end, or maybe we're going to sound more like Carcass."

The members of Gojira aren't exactly old. Dudes are in their late 30s and early 40s, and have been doing Gojira since 1996. Still, guitarist and vocalist Joe Duplantier wonders what the band will look like in 10 years and at what point they would hang it up for touring (or even for good).

In a new episode of Apple Music 1 with Zane Lowe, Duplantier discussed how that might all go down. Duplantier said he's not interested in touring when he's old, but truly isn't sure what the band will sound like in the future. As he puts it, it's as likely they'll sound like Led Zeppelin as much as it is they'll sound like Carcass.

"In an ideal world, we'd like to develop our band to the maximum of its potential, with the years we have left, of being a touring band," he said. "It's very tiring, and maybe we don't want to do that until we're 75 or 80 years old, like the Rolling Stones and stuff. It's pretty intense what we do. So maybe we have another 15 years, maybe 20. I don't know. We'll see. Mario has more time. You're done in five years.

"For me, I would like at the same time that we expand our band, and our art… And it's a craft. It's not just a business or entertainment. There's more to it. It's art, and we're sort of digging, and we're very curious to see where this will lead us one day, what kind of music we'll be doing in 10 years. I don't know. Maybe it's still going to be super hard, and maybe we're going to go back in time and sound more like Led Zeppelin, in the end, or maybe we're going to sound more like Carcass. I don't know. We'll see.

"But also I'd like to develop the activism part of the band, and in an ideal world, I'd like to launch our own foundation, because I think when you have the energy to dig, and the curiosity to dig with people around the world, what are the main problems that could be fixed with a little help, then people that trust you, can just give you money. 'Oh, okay. That's a nice foundation. I know the people. I trust…'"

Check out Gojira's latest single "Into The Storm" below. Gojira will release their new album Fortitude on April 30. Fortitude was recorded and produced by Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio – Gojira’s Ridgewood, Queens, headquarters – and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine).
