GOJIRA's Joe Duplantier Calls "Amazonia" A Tribute To SEPULTURA

gojira-2021

You might've heard Gojira's recent single "Amazonia" and thought to yourself that it sounds a little like Sepultura. This is exact same thought that guitarist and vocalist Joseph Duplantier, as well as the rest of the band, had when they finished writing it.

Duplantier said in a recent interview with Cuartel Del Metal that he and the rest of the band are huge Sepultura fans and were particularly blown away by the simplicity of Chaos A.D. When asked about the Sepultura influence on "Amazonia", Duplantier pretty much laughed it off and said it was basically a ripoff.

"I go, 'Yup.' And it's a compliment, and there is no shame here. And we ripped them off, but we didn't do it on purpose. But we realized it right after. We were, like, 'Oh, that sounds like Sepultura. Ahhh, whatever.' It's a tribute to Sepultura — how about that? It's about Brazil. It's about the Amazon. It's tribal."

Gojira will release their new album Fortitude on April 30. Fortitude was recorded and produced by Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio – Gojira’s Ridgewood, Queens, headquarters – and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine).
