Corey Taylor is a man who puts heart and soul into everything he does. Which is why he says he doesn't like pop music at all- because it's soulless and process. In an interview with Loudwire, he pretty concisely states his opinion, though as usual it's extremely well-put.
“I feel like I’m being stung by 1,000 bees all at once. It’s so auto-tuned and it’s so beat corrected and it’s so canned and processed and lifeless. You might as well be listening to a fucking piece of wood at that point. It bothers me because I put so much into everything I do.
I put so much into my music, I bleed for it, I die for it every goddamn night. To watch these people basically let a computer go through the motions and do all the work for them, it’s insulting to everyone out there who has more talent and less attention.
I think people listen to it cause they feel like that’s the only choice they have. So I’ve been just slowly but surely kinda trying to put the message out there. Like there’s other types of music, there’s better types of music, there’s better musicians, there’s better performers, better songwriters, better everything—Instead of this fucking Candyland, Disney, Kid-Bop fucking… ‘Now That’s What I Call Shit Music Volume 2007′, it’s fucking ridiculous.”
First of all, I think there's at least a little irony here in calling pop music "canned and processed and lifeless" when you have hordes of metal bands, big and small, floating around that quantize their music to shit. So the negative criticism there I would assume means he feels this way about anyone who processes their music to hell?
I think the generalization there is to the absolute worst pop music humanly available. Not pop music in general. Say what you want about some bullshit made up numbers like "metal credibility" or whatever, but people like Ben Folds, Sara Barellies and Zac Brown Band can play the shit out of their instruments and write songs with substance (outside the radio fare).
So what do you think? Is Taylor generalizing too much here or is he dead on?
