AT THE GATES' Frontman Says New Album Is "Heavier And More Death Metal" Than 2014 Album

"There is a slight change of direction, maybe, but At the Gates fans shouldn’t be worried, it is still an ATG record."

At The Gates recently entered Parlour Studios with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir) to record the follow-up to its 2014 album At War With Reality. The album will be the band's first with God Macabre guitarist Jonas Stålhammar, who replaced Anders Björler earlier this year. Frontman Tomas Lindberg tells Decibel that fans have nothing to worry about in terms of the albums sound, and that the new album will "heavier and more death metal than the last one."

It is true that there is a big shift in the line-up. What you have to take into consideration is that Jonas Björler wrote 40% of both Slaughter Of The Soul and At War With Reality. Some people seem to forget this. They just assume that the lead guitarist is the sole songwriter.

Jonas had to take a lot more responsibility this time around, but me and him have had a really great and creative time writing this album. There is a slight change of direction, maybe, but At the Gates fans shouldn’t be worried, it is still an ATG record. If anything, it is heavier and more death metal than the last one.

Lindberg also recently compared the mood and lyrics of the new album to At The Gates' 1992 debut album The Red In The Sky Is Ours.

Lindberg says the entire new album was written by himself and Jonas Björler, and that Stålhammar didn't really get the chance to contribute because he joined when pretty much all the songs were done being written. Lindberg says he's excited to have Stålhammar on board though and looks forward to his contributions on the next album though! So there's something else to look forward to in the far future, right?
