I'm digging the trend lately of reworking Metallica's new singles to see how they would sound with the band's old tone. There was the …And Justice for All tone, and then the Right the Lightning and Hit The Lights tones. Metallica covers are in right now.
But, I swear, I don't think I've ever heard a heavier cover of Metallica than the one just released by Nightkin. Nightkin is the brainchild of ex-The Black Dahlia Murder bassist-turned-guitarist David Lock, along with The Red Chord guitarist Mike "Gunface" McKenzie on vocals and drummer Zach Gibson, who just released a new EP called Stampede, which features a new song, and three covers – one of which is of Metallica's "Trapped Under Ice." This track goes hard:
The entire EP is worth listening to, because his covers of Slayer's "Silent Scream" and King Diamond's "Welcome Home" are equally excellent, and the new track is fantastic too. Here's the entire EP:
