Nickelback is being sued by songwriter Kirk Johnston for allegedly ripping off his song "Rock Star".

According to a lawsuit as reported by Blabbermouth, Johnston alleges Nickelback stole their 2005 hit "Rockstar" from his 2001 song "Rock Star". Johnston claims he wrote the song as a part of the band Snowblind Revival, whose demo was sent to Roadrunner Records' parent companies Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Johnston further claims Nickelback had access to that demo, and stole the song.

According to the lawsuit, Johnston claims Nickelback stole "a substantial amount of the music in 'Rockstar' … including "the tempo, song form, melodic structure, harmonic structures, and lyrical themes." Nickelback is being sued for copyright infringement and an injunction against further infringement, but claims that "fundamentally, the works at issue are not substantially similar to an ordinary observer."
