Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch went through a bit of a Jesus period, if you remember, where he actually up and left the band. He's more recently come out and said that he still loves Jesus and hates religion, but there was a time where Head was all about that God life. So much so that he said that God told him that rock and metal musicians would be coming around to the idea of believing in Jesus!
One of God's first converts was Tool's Maynard James Keenan, which turned out to be a massive hoax and kind of made Head look like a jackass as Head recounts in a recent podcast episode of Allegedly.
âMaybe going around with a white gown looking like Jesus. They were like, they really did think I got brainwashed⌠I dunno, itâs kind of cool look back, but I dunno.â
âThis is the most embarrassing thing, this is the most. Maynard from Tool went to MTV and heâs like âI just want to tell you guys that I found God and heâs changed my lifeâŚâ and they wrote an article and they emailed me and they said he like âhey, did you hear about Maynard? What do you think about that?â And I was like âahh yeah God told me this was going to happen to other musicians and itâs going to be awesome and Iâm happy for himâ and it was just a big hoax, he was just making fun of me. Thatâs when I backed out of the media. It wasnât like horrid, it was just like, ahhh, punked.â
Ouch. To be fair, Maynard has such a dry sense of humor that it's almost impossible to tell when he's joking and when he's not, though he also doesn't seem like the type of dude to wake up and just accept Jesus into his life.
On an incredibly darker note, Head also recounts the time he FedEx'ed himself meth during a really, really low period of his life.
âIn Germany, 2004, in the winter and I was watching a package come from California into New York, into the UK and then somewhere else and then it landed in Germany. And it had my three 8-balls of meth in it. And I was watching it through FedEx mail online. So that was the gutter.â
âI could get arrested for stuff like that. You donât send drugs over⌠I was just like Iâve got my daughter at home â Iâm risking everything, everything, in my life.â
âThat was the period when I was suicidal. I just hated myself. Guilt, shame and all that.â
Welch adds that the band is shooting to have its new album out late this summer, and to have a new song out toward the start of the season. In previous interviews, he's said it's the band's heaviest album in a while, so here's hoping.
Might as well end that one on a positive note, right?
