Metallica is a record-selling machine, with their nearly 30 year old Black Album still pushing over 5,000 units a week. Today, they're celebrating another accolade – being the first act to hit number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock airplay chart four decades in a row.
Their latest radio single is "All Within My Hands" from their S&M2 release, which just hit number one.
Of course, if you're doing the math, Metallica has been around for five decades now, but actually didn't have a radio hit in their first decade of existence. Even the Black Album, their best selling record, failed to give the band a number 1 song on mainstream rock charts.
It was in fact "Until It Sleeps" which was the first number one the band had in 1996 on the Load album cycle. They've had 10 singles top the mainstream hard rock charts.
Congrats to Metallica for still being the biggest metal band around.
