Old school, Finnish death metal has been reincarnated in Portland's Petrification.

Old school, Finnish death metal has been reincarnated in Portland's Petrification.

Death metal has been a global force in extreme music for over three decades. European legends like EntombedAbhorrence, and Grave helped build the cornerstone for the grotesque. Seething old school death metal has been a mainstay in extreme music because of its bestial sound. It has appeared in the United States and the United Kingdom in bands like Autopsy and Bolt Thrower, respectively, and seeped into today's biggest and upcoming talents. For Petrification, the Portland, Oregon-based quintet channels the most gnarled and gory foundations that death metal was built upon.

With strong influence from Finnish death metal heroes, Petrification has crafted a grimy and putrid debut demo called Summon Horrendous Destruction. We at Metal Injection are fortunate enough to premiere a new track from this demo called "Stagnation of Transmigration." Opening on a blistering, buzzsaw riff, the Portland five-piece rips through a raw, vicious display of deathly might. Layered guitars from Tom Roberts (a.k.a WarVest, formerly of War Master), David Pruitt, and Chris Nukala create rhythm and complexity while shifts into slower tempos give nods to early Rippikoulu. Mario Thunder's rampaging work on drums supplements furious strings. Jason Barnett's vomitous roar adds a final layer of vile horror to the mix.

Petrification can be found on Facebook and on Bandcamp (where the digital copy of the demo can be purchased.) Cassettes can be pre-ordered through Sentient Ruin LaboratoriesSummon Horrendous Destruction will be released on March 3. Additionally, a previously premiered track can be heard at CVLT Nation right now.
