If you recall, almost this time last year, Metal Injection premiered a track from the Ottawa black metal project, La Torture Des Ténèbres. "The Doom of New Orleans" was a chapter of a greater story told through Civilization Is the Tomb of Our Noble Gods. On their third album, the trio built a retro-futuristic world in which the narrative of their music resides. This November, LTDT finally returns to their world on IV – Memoirs of a Machine Girl. On songs like "Love Pumps Through My Veins As Quickly As You Kiss Me Goodbye"—their same, dizzying musical style has returned as well.
The album's fourth track runs just over 14 minutes long, so buckle up. In fact, each song on the impending album is at least 10. The metallic haze that lingers over "Love…" is dense. It buries the vocals and, from time to time, the instrumentation. Yet, if you listen closely, a subtle melody is occasionally able to pierce the haze's shroud. It is somber—and quite striking. The melody seemingly plays into the title of the track and it certainly adds to the aesthetic of it all. The relatively romantic tone soon dies out, however. Nearly isolated vocals dominate the much of the latter half of the song. These tormented wails echo out in a terrifying a capella. It may be a tough listen for some, but La Torture Des Ténèbres is wildly riveting and unique.
