Drug Honkey's new album has quite a bit of clout behind it. Cloak of Skies boasts talent contributions from Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Corrections House) and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu). The cover's artwork was also done by the incredibly talented Paolo Girardi. Yet, these names simply bolster an already talented lineup that forms the death/doom quartet. The Chicago band changed their name to Drug Honkey in 1999. Since the switch, they have tinkered with the construct of doom metal piece by piece. Their latest tests come in the form of seven new songs, one of which we have today.
"(It's Not) the Way" is an atmospheric and effect-driven composition that is laced with a sense of dread. Much of the song's length dedicates itself to an experimental wave of synths and samples. In fact, it is actually close to two-thirds of the track. However, a strong undertow of sustained guitar riffs and patient drums keep the song rooted in a metallic realm. The combination of the digital effects and doom metal's trudge creates an illusion of Godflesh ominously played at half speed. By the fifth minute, "(It's Not) the Way" erupts into madness. A late-blooming crescendo ultimately provided a thrilling and tense finish to the new album's centerpiece.
