The Alabama duo of Calques undoubtedly breeds a blistering brand of metal. Their music is born from fierce punk and raw black metal—then bathed in harsh noise. The budding Montgomery act prepares for the release of their debut EP, Civilizing, later this month. From the sounds of their first single and today's premiere of "Exurbanisation"; the EP may damn well peel the flesh from bone.
"Exurbanisation" is caustic. The track runs well over six minutes and is rife with piercing wails of feedback and industrial noise. Getting through it may seem a tall order, but once dissected, a well of organized chaos emerges. A blackened, mid-tempo rhythm builds the foundation for frenetic sections of blasting drums or spitting vocals to jump from. Fans of Akatharsia's No Generation Without Corruption from earlier this year may note some similarities between the two. Blends of raw black metal and punk can certainly be riveting. Bands like Calques show how exciting that blend can be.
