While I spent last Friday completely engulfed in work and metal shenanigans for our upcoming Mayhem Fest coverage, there was a much larger non-metal affair happening in London at the same time. I'm talking about the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony that includes over 200 nations and an array of sports I couldn't name if my life depended on it. It just so happens that a song from one of my favorite bands, Muse, was chosen as the official track for this year's Olympic Games. The epic song "Survival" off their highly anticipated upcoming album, The 2nd Law debuted on BBC Radio, and will be played through out the games and ceremonies this year.
Frontman Matthew Bellamy comments:
"It's a huge honor to have the track chosen as such a major part of the London 2012 Olympic Games. I wrote it with the Games in mind as it expresses a sense of conviction and determination to win."
I have to admit I was both stoked and hesitant once Muse announced a new record in the works. While they've been talking about dubstep influences in the news, I ultimately know they're a band that knows exactly what they're doing. I was really surprised to hear not only a lack of dubstep in the debut track, but more of the organic rock and melody I fell in love with on early Muse records. The 2nd Law (which refers to the study of the transfer of energy, for all you non-science geeks out there) is set for release on 9/17/12.
