It's Monday and Mondays suck, so let's grind it out with an EP premiere from Split/Cross entitled Rise of Discontent.
This week we're hitting on a more hardcore/punk sound. Split Cross hails out of PA and plays a strain of hardcore that is plenty sludgy, plenty crusty and plenty grind. The three piece plainly state on their Bandcamp: no gimmicks. No bullshit. Just noise. And concerning the EP, the band has this to say about it:
"Rise of Discontent is a 8 track EP that covers the band's views on world political lapses stemming from the injustices happening on a daily basis in America. That being said, the band also touches on social short comings that skewers through the minds of Americans. On the lines of mental illness and drug addiction and how we treat them as taboo or a crime."
"Blindspot" opens with the famous speech from Howard Beale in Network. But instead of one run, the track splits it up, ending on: "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore." A fitting introduction to the album, as this beast is plenty pissed. Split/Cross's thick, sludgy sound is reminece of bands like Dystopia and hits just as hard. Only two tracks later "Dis-seption" serves up a similar feeling that wouldn't have sounded out of place on Human=Garbage.
Meanwhile, this album thrives in a crusty, metallic hardcore way. "Splinter" starts slow, but kicks into gear and doesn't let up until it ends. Following that is one the grindier tracks, "Rat Cult." The track has a thick sound with an old school grind feel. Though it's "Fallen Victim" that really burns things up by going on a blasting rampage.
Rise of Discontent is a banger of an EP. It's got a bit of a burn to it as its slower stuff is in the first half of the record, while the second half is blasting animosity. Kinda like Dystopia meets Kill the Client. Get grinding on this hell-beast and burn through your Monday.
For those interested in physical copies, I'm told those will be coming at a later date, so make sure to follow the band's social media for announcements on when that will be.
