I was so pumped to finally get to experience Argonauts live, a band who I've hyped up to ridiculous levels for myself, which of course features Dimitri Minakakis (formerly of The Dillinger Escape Plan), drummer Dave Witte and guitarist John Adubato (Burnt By The Sun) and bassist Brett Bamburger (East of the Wall). The band played at ABC No Rio, a DIY venue which is basically the equivalent of going to see a band play at their rehearsal space with 30 or so strangers standing right next to. I am saying this as a good thing, because this was the best way to first experience this band… and it was good. So good.
The riffs were thick and had groove, the drumming (as usual by Witte) was awesome, Brett's basslines and his facial expressions were immersive and Dimitri still has that signature yell that made me initially fall in love with Dillinger. Basically, it was the most satisfying live concert experience I've had in a while. And I wasn't the only one. There was not one person in the room who wasn't headbanging to their 25 minute set. You couldn't help it, the music had so much groove.
After it was over, I really wanted some recorded music, but alas, there is none yet. This band is in its infant stages, having only seven songs written total. Dear Argonauts, STOP BEING BUSY WITH ANYTHING ELSE AND GET IN THE STUDIO AND RECORD SO I HAVE SOMETHING TO LISTEN TO ON LOOP. For now, I guess I'll settle for the above live footage.
