It's been over 11 years since the release of Tool's last studio album, 10,000 Days, and if there is one positive, we can say with certainly it won't be 11 years until we hear the next album. Things seem to be ramping up for the new release. Earlier this year, bassist Justin Chancellor said the album is in the oven, whatever that means. Danny Carey told a fan that the band plan to enter the studio to begin recording in the fall, so that's the plan right now.
Chancellor appeared on this week's episode of MetalSucks' podcast and offered a more concrete update:
“It really is an evolving thing. Being out the last couple of weeks on the road and playing together, this year, we’ve really kind of hit a new level I’d say. [We’re] really excited to be around each other and we’re gonna just bang it out when we get back home, we’re ready to go…”
“We’re about 90% there, it’s been like a crazy science project—kind of like a petri dish. We’ve just been really picky over what we want to put on this new album and really want to come up with something completely unique. Plus, we have endless amounts of material to sift through, so it’s just been a process… a little different from last time.”
I would say it is pretty different, seeing as the last one didn't take 11 years. The band has already shot down any possibility of the album coming out this year. Maybe next year?
For all the math nerds, if we were to take Justin at his word, and it took them 11 years to be 90% completed, then that means the album will be done in another 1.2 years. Then again, that's not taking into account the touring cycle immediately after the album release 11 years ago.
