Cerebric Turmoil are a German-based technical death metal group who I've been following for several years now. I first stumbled upon them when I was searching the depths of Metal-Archives from Defeated Sanity's page to see what other groups their members have been in. This led me to Cerebric Turmoil as bass player Jacob Schmidt from Defeated Sanity was once in the band, and who also plays on four songs on Neural Net Meltdown.
Needless to say, I was intrigued already, and was then further pleased to see that Tom "Fountainhead" Geldschläger (Obscura) was playing guitar for them at the time. While he is no longer in the band, he does have an awesome solo on album closer "Vile Effect Momentum". The band then broke up but reformed in 2010, leading us to their long-awaited debut full-length, Neural Net Meltdown. The record includes a few standout tracks from their prior demos and splits, but overall its mainly new material. And for most people all of it will be new material to their ears anyways! Additionally the futuristic and bizarre sci-fi robotic looking art was done by none other than Phlegeton, the vocalist from Wormed.
Cerebric Turmoil have crafted one of the most demented and terrifying records I've heard in a long time. Imagine what Psyopus mixed with Wormed and shades of Cephalic Carnage would sound like and you'd arrive at the chaotic and complex sound that Cerebric Turmoil conjure up. Neural Net Meltdown is full of bat-shit crazy music that unfolds in a non-linear structured way where few parts repeat and sudden spastic shifts are the norm. After listening to Neural Net Meltdown at least 20 times, I'm still just as jarred and confused by its dazzling ferocity as I was the first time I sat down and was blown away by this. If you like your technical death metal warped and alien-like, and fried in a brutal coated slam shell, than you'll find a lot to love on Neural Net Meltdown. This has to be one of the most memorable and unorthodox tech-death records I've heard all year. So stream the full record below and have your mind melted. Neural Net Meltdown officially comes out this upcoming Friday, November 13th through Amputated Vein Records and can be ordered at the label's Cerebric Turmoil Bandcamp page.
