Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
GREEN LUNG – Graveyard Sun
Another advance sampling of this UK band's forthcoming October full length on Svart, 'Black Harvest'. Like so many of their country's metal forefathers, folk and prog history get front seats with delicate acoustic plucking, epic choruses and shadows of gothic moors. We're excited to have the band play some of their fave tunes and influences on their forthcoming Gimme special due October 2nd.
BRAND OF SACRIFICE – Enemy
Jared Klein from Rivers of Nihil guest DJ'd this week and spun our tops with this one. An amazing short film of creepy ambience giving way to filth-caked riff mayhem and cameo from Underoath's Spencer Chamberlain. Deathcore new plateaus reached on BoS's latest LP, 'Lifeblood' out now.
FEED THE CORPSES TO THE PIGS – Ghost of Winter
Julia Child looking good here in this instructional cooking video that adds new life to the terminology 'feed your face.' With a guest spot from Death/Massacre's Rick Rozz and a new Horror Pain Gore Death EP, New Mexico's FTCTTP are on an ascending trajectory. Of note: four out of four viewings of this clip on this end segued into that Foo Fighters performance with the little 11-year old on drums, so clearly You Tube's algorithm is encouraging the cannabilism of kids I guess. That is wrong!
BATAILLE – En Avant
Featured this week on Gimme's By This Wax I Rule! show. French surrealist Georges Bataille has no doubt been a literary shadow on black metal (see Deathspell Omega), but here a whole French band dedicated to his name continues to plumb the influence and add a whole new dimension to the atmospheric realm of the genre. A foggy, mist-soaked backdrop carries the undercurrent of this track, with cascading synths and flutes weaving in and out of the structure. Evocative stuff.
MATT HARVEY – Brainiac Descends
With Exhumed and Gruesome, Matt Harvey heavily referred to his horror/splatterfilm fandom, but here on his solo work 'Last Son of Krypton' (coming out on Relapse), he takes a deep pandemic dive into his love of comics lore. The result: a towering selection of instrumental soundtrack work, full of pomp, orchestrated tension, and omnipresent doom. Chalk that up to villainy in general (there's a track called "Lex Luthor, Man of Tomorrow"); overall a welldone leftturn from the blood-dripping breakneck riffery we know him for!
