A question that Lars Ulrich surely gets all the time is some variation of which Metallica album he thinks is the best or the worst. Well, Lars actually took the time to publicly answer such a question for Classic Rock Magazine.
When asked the worst record he's made, Lars gave a very diplomatic answer. "We haven’t made a bad record! But seriously, without pussying out, I don’t look at any of them as mistakes. Kill ’Em All [1983]sounds like a very long time ago, a lot of youthful energy on that one. But I’m very at ease with the past."
He gave an equally diplomatic answer for the best record he's made. "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct is the one I have the fewest issues with, and the one that still sounds the most representative of my current head space."
As for the best bands Lars has ever seen live, he names "Motörhead, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy." AC/DC's Bon Scott is his favorite singer, and Ritchie Blackmore is his favorite "guitar hero." The "anthem" is Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water."
Asked to name the greatest album of all time, Lars said "I’ll give you five in random order: Made In Japan [Deep Purple], Lightning To The Nations [Diamond Head], No Sleep ’Til Hammersmith [Motörhead], Definitely Maybe [Oasis] and the first Rage Against The Machine album [self-titled]." Lars noted that Rage was the band he was most into in the last year.
