Every Thursday, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.
VASTUM – Abcess Inside Us
Bay Area heroes return with 'Orificial Purge' on 20 Buck Spin (four years after 'Hole Below') and continue their path of gutterstare/mutant death metal rife with some perverse obsessions and furious attack. They still occupy a sludgier-tempo stance in comparison to sister band Acephalix with shared member Daniel Butler plus Leila Abdul-Rauf keeping a cool dichotomy vocalwise. Dan hosts a Gimme DJ special coming up in January.
CASKET HUFFER – Filth Ouroboros
In the 90's a recall a band Gas Huffer, but yep, this monicker takes it up a notch. Wyoming-bred crazy Death insanity with piles and piles of chaotic thrash, stumbling directions, junkyard percussion and pained echo-drenched vox all cloaked in a blackened atmosphere of complete soul abandonment.
ABIGAIL WILLIAMS – I Will Depart
Ken Sorceron and his crew's 5th LP continues to keep them in somewhat of an outsider tag in the black metal scene, which is probably fine all around. Abigail Williams' worldly view of metal incorporates some fresh and ideas that can be often a bit askew to what the accepted norm can be. There's ample cello, symphonic smatterings, less of a penchant to dive into lo-fi production in place of clearer sounds, tasteful clouds of atmosphere, melody, with ache overshadowing any kind of viciousness. Yet they remain spot on for the genre's needs. They're on tour right now with Ensiferum, Kalmah and Aenimus.
BLOOD INCANTATION – Slave Species To the Gods
Another of the bands taking death metal to a new, somewhat loftier place, and not necessarily a masses-friendly one either. The mere existence of an 18-minute opus on the latest LP 'Hidden History of the Human Race' shows that Blood Incantation are certainly ones to defy convention. This is bloody-n-brutal stuff, but encompasses a new larger scope you don't see this genre dabbling much in. A great album.
BLOOMING CARRIONS – Sisters in Blooming Flesh
Nice surging blackened insanity from the duo of EvM and PkE, from a new Iron Bonehead EP. Layers of vacuum cleaner/air raid siren guitars mired in the gunk of a sheer curtain of dark fuzz, gutteral emissions bellowing from black trenches of confusion and filth. Drums blend vaguely into this curtain, repetitive beehive solos churn over the chaos before diving back into the fuzz gauze.
