Deafheaven has been extremely vague about what they've been up to recently. The band appeared to be in the studio for a little while, but never confirmed anything, and announced yesterday that Doomriders bassist Chris Johnson was officially part of their lineup.
All of a sudden, the band has released a new song "Honeycomb" with an accompanying music video and it's exactly the shoegaze-y, gloriously depressing black metal you've come to love from Deafheaven. Seriously, is there such thing as summer black metal? Because this is exactly that. It's essentially everything people loved about Sunbather, but with the straightforward thinking of New Bermuda, and some rather surfy bits toward the middle.
No word on the new album yet, but I'm sure an announcement is coming soon. It's also worth noting that this is the first time Deafheaven has officially had a bassist since 2016, though Johnson has been playing live with the band since 2017.
