A change in sound isn't necessarily a bad thing. Opeth has been doing it fairly well, Ulver has consistently done it well, and even Decapitated has changed it up in a pretty great way. Then there are bands like Sonic Syndicate, whose sound changed from melodic death metal to some kind of pop and it's just… bad. Maybe because it's just one original member left in the band, or maybe because Sonic Syndicate is trying to be more of a viable radio band, but no matter which way you slice it, "Confessions"is just a really boring song in an overtly major key.
