I don't claim to know every band I write about each week, but this week (since it's a slow week) I decided to make it a point to write about bands I don't know about. The results are mixed, but I've discovered at least one band I want to hear more of. So in this edition I give you a bunch of shit you may not know. To the metals…

This one is for those that are feeling nostalgic about the metal days of 2002. There seems to be a nu metal revival rumbling, and more bands seem to be getting signed that are coming with it. Fungonewrong are one of them.

i know very little about this band. So far, I can tell they love themselves some of that old school death metal sound. They're intense, technical, and lo-fi in that way that purists of the genre enjoy.

Krigsgrav – The Carrion Fields
Genre: Melodic black metal
Origin: Keller, Texas
Label: Naturmacht

This band is pretty cool. Their newer stuff has a bit of an Agalloch feel to it. It sounds epic without being silly, and seems rather fond of nature, philosophy and the likes. So they're a lot like Agalloch in spirit as well, but they sound different enough to not be another melodic black metal in an every growing crowd.

Fans of this band may want to rejoice as this is a rerelease of their eps Justice, Warpath, and full-length Know Your Exits. The EPs apparently haven't been available on CD before, so that's sorta neat if your a collector. Get your breakdowns and piggy vocals here.

Taatsi – Amidst The Trees
Genre: Atmospheric black metal
Origin: Helsinki, Finland
Label: Forever Plagued

This band just lurches through darkness on this album. The songs are lo-fi, evil and mostly mid-tempo. Their is certainly a nod to 90's black metal with their overall aesthetic, but I'd hesitate to call them straight-up black metal. I'd say they should carry the badge of being closer to "kvlt" whereas, Krigsgrav has a sound that would appeal to those just getting into the genre with bands like Wolves in THe Throne Room, Agalloch, and the likes. Both bands carry similar ideas, but they execute them much differently.
