Greetings, and welcome to the first official Weekly Injection of Summer. This week's edition features everyone's prehistoric themed prog band, stoner parody, a couple long-running innovators, and more! Could one of these albums have this year's song of the summer? Let's find out. To the metals…

Allegaeon – Elements of the Infinite

Allegaeon-Elements-of-the-Infinite-620x620

Genre: Technical death metal
Origin: Fort Collins, Colorado
Label: Metal Blade

Buy now on Amazon.com

One of the finest in the modern tech death genre has returned with what might be their finest release yet. Songs like "Though Ages of Ice – Otzi's Curse" and  "Genocide For Praise – Vals for the Vitruvian Man" should be game changers for the band. So good.

Cannabis Corpse – From Wisdom To Baked Cannabis Corpse - From Wisdom to Baked

Genre: Death metal
Origin: Richmond, Virginia
Label: Season Of Mist

Land Phil from Municipal Waste has really outdone himself on the fourth record for his pot theme quasi-parody band. Song titles all seemed to be nods to Death, so fans of Chuck Schuldiner should at least read over these and have a few pleasant "I see what you did there" moments. Full review here.

Corrosion Of Conformity – IX Corrosion-Of-Conformity-IX

Genre: Southern crossover
Origin: Raleigh, North Carolina
Label: Candlelight

Buy now on Amazon.com

2010 saw the return of COC sans Pepper Keenan. It took a little bit but the band has finally mastered being a three-headed vocal machine and filled the void that Pepper Keenan left. This might be the best the band has sounded in almost a decade, not that these legends weren't worth your time at any point.

Godflesh – Decline and Fall EP Godflesh new EP

Genre: Industrial/Experimental
Origin: Birmingham, England
Label: Avalanche

Buy now on Amazon.com

This is the band's first new material since 2001, and this was not a return I saw coming. GC Green and Justin Broadrick are lurching back into the darkest recesses of your mind with this one. A fine place to get introduced to Godflesh if you're not familiar with them. I'd strong advise checking out their other stuff as well.

Kobra and the Lotus – High Priestess 81elD0mq+0L._SL1500_

Genre: heavy metal/thrash
Origin: Calgary, Canada
Label: Titan

Buy now on Amazon.com

So often I'm on here complained about how there's some female fronted band that sounds like Nightwish, and I'm always stoked to present one that cannot be put in that category. Kobra and the Lotus is a band paying homage to 70's heavy metal and 80's thrash. Lead singer Kobra Paige has a unique and impressive set of pipes.

Mastodon – Once More 'Round the Sun mastodononcemoreroundthesun

Genre: Progressive Sludge
Origin: Atlanta, Georgia
Label: Reprise

Buy now on Amazon.com

The new Mastodon probably won't appease the vocal group of fans whining for a return to the Leviathan/Remission sound, but Once More 'Round The Sun sounds like all the best parts of the last three records rolled into one. The atmosphere of Skye, the eclectic nature of Blood Mountain and the catchy tunes of The Hunter. A great release and one of my favorites of the year.

Septicflesh – Titan Septicflesh-Titan

Genre: Symphonic Metal
Origin: Athens, Greece
Label: Prosthetic

Buy now on Amazon.com

Dark, epic, and ever so symphonic. Septicflesh take what Dimmu Borgir has been working for years to perfect and take it to new heights. This is their best release since the reunion.
