This week's new heavy metal releases include a lot of proper heavy records, a triple guitar attack, and more! To the metals…
Conquer Divide – Slow Burn
Genre: Metalcore/modern metal
Origin: Detroit, Michigan
Label: Mascot
Buy now Bandcamp
Starting this week with some melodic grooves. In the eight years since their debut album Conquer Divide's sound has grown and shifted in very cool ways. This is huge sounding and a catchy modern metal record.
Cryptopsy – As Gomorrah Burns
Genre: Technical death metal
Origin: Montreal, Quebec
Label: Nuclear Blast
Buy now Bandcamp
It's been nine years since Cryptopsy brought the beatings, and you should be braced for As Gomorrah Burns. This one does not let up. I feel like since that one album (you know the one), these guys have set out to prove they can still crush, and this one crushes.
Dying Fetus – Make Them Beg For Death
Genre: Death metal
Origin: Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Label: Relapse
Buy now on Bandcamp
In a strange twist, the latest from Dying Fetus is a surprising blend of easy listening and Sigur Rós-esque atmosphere. Of course, none of that is true. This is gnarly death metal sonically and visually. Whatever the opposite of a romp is. That's what you're getting here.
Kvelertak – Endling
Genre: Rock n roll/black metal
Origin: Stavanger, Norway
Label: Rise
Buy now on Amazon
The mighty triple guitar attack of Kvelertak has returned with more lightly blackened good times, heavy metal. This is another fun as hell record from the guys. Jeff's full review is here.
Pomegranate Tiger – All Input Is Error
Genre: Progressive metal
Origin: Windsor, Ontario
Label: Self-released
This gem almost snuck by me. Dropping this on a Monday? Martin and Matt, you goofs. This is a wild journey of instrumental metal that's full of guitar tricks, shredding, and rhythmic chaos that remains compelling start to finish. Eight years is far too long to have to wait for another one of these.
Sylosis – A Sign Of Things To Come
Genre: Melodic death metal
Origin: Reading, England
Label: Nuclear Blast
Buy now on Bandcamp
Kvelertak and Pomegranate Tiger were nice breaks from the bleak, weren't it? Well that break's over as Sylosis hit us with some melodic and moody death metal. There's plenty of melodic catchiness here, but it does seem like Katatonia doing their version of Soilwork.
Uada – Crepsuscule Natura
Genre: Melodic black metal
Origin: Portland, Oregon
Label: Eisenwald
Buy now on Bandcamp
Wrapping this week with five tracks of spacy black metal, because you earned it, sport! Half the band is new this time and they're fitting right in. The new guitarist and drummer are bringing the required combo of tremolo picking and lots of drum hits. Honestly, not a lot in the way of frills, but just a cool album of long black metal tracks.
