We know Mastodon has been writing an album for some time now and that Dave Grohl is not going to be on the record. Today we learned a few more tidbits, like the producer and two song titles from the album.
First up, my favorite type of non-news about a band recording a new album: song titles. I love when PR companies try to spin track listing reveals as some sort of big deal even though until you actually hear the songs, the titles are meaningless. Here, let me show you. Mastodon have announced two song titles already, “Blasteroids” and “All the Heavy Lifting.” See, nothing! It says nothing, it means nothing, it does nothing. But still, that means two songs are complete, which means we're at least a 1/5th of the way there!
Also, the band is working with producer Mike Elizondo. Metalheads might not recognize the name, but this guy is a super-producer to the stars. In the past he's worked with Dr. Dre and Eminem, Fiona Apple, Pink and Maroon 5. All legit superstar musicians. Clearly, Mastodon chose this guy to help them reach "the next level" of rock stardom, and you cannot blame them. I don't think we should expect to hear their version of a Maroon 5 album, but I think this says that you can expect a polished record that will try to take the Mastodon sound and appeal to as many ears as possible.
While all this news is great, there is still no official release date for the record. Hopefully, it will surface by the end of the year.
