The Metallica machine keeps rolling. Last week, we learned The Black Album returned to the Billboard charts at #200, pushing over 6,000 units that week, which accounts for purchases and streaming. In pure sales, the album sold 2,235 copies last week. It's monster numbers like that that led to Metallica being the #2 top selling artist in 2019.
The only artist to top Metallica in pure sales was Queen, helped by their blockbuster film, Bohemian Rhapsody. Metallica made an estimated $3.6M from album sales in 2019, which beat out the sales of Billie Eilish, Paul McCartney and BTS, among others.
Tool also made the top sales list, likely due to not only the release of Fear Inoculum, but having their entire back catalog available digitally for the first time. The band earned $1.5 million in sales alone.
