Quick Review: UNKIND Pelon Juuret

It always seems like a cop out when someone listens to metal and says, “How can you like that? I don’t even understand the words.” Metal, as most of us know,  transcends the literal in so many ways that one distills the feeling derived from a piece of music, instead of relying on the prose spit into the mic to instill the attitude. Listening to Unkind passively, initially you don’t even notice that most of the lyrics are penned in Finnish; simply let it bathe you in the wall of noise.

On the second pass at it, their fifth full length, mixed with a crowd of vinyl only releases, Pelon Juuret achieved what many attempt creating, an all-encompassing crustcore album, featuring classic d-beat speed and lift mixed with droning down tempo and listenable songs. Where many bands fail, they rely on too much of one or the other, Unkind forges a delicate balance between them, migrating from one style to the next, then converging both into one song. Heavy, potent and effective, a release that has seemed to skulk by unnoticed by many should be noted atop your list.
