EP Review: CULTFINDER Hell's Teeth

For a lot of people, one of the enduring attractions to heavy metal is the technical proficiency many of the genre's musicians possess. Without a doubt, the metal community has the largest pool of ability in any of the popular musical styles. This wealth of talent is understandable since it's nigh impossible to unintentionally create the heavy atmosphere metal relies on. And forget about writing, much less actually playing, a shredding guitar solo without knowledge of song composition, tempo, and scales. This surplus of technical wankery is all well and good, but sometimes you just want to sit back, crank your stereo, and have your ears battered by raw sonic brutality. It's in these situations that you're going to want Cultfinder's new EP Hell's Teeth on hand.

Cultfinder are a relatively new band from the UK that spew abrasive black thrash with a substantial punk influence. Hell's Teeth is the band's second EP following 2012's Black Thrashing Terror, and it's worth a listen if crusty, primal black thrash is your cup of tea. The EP consists of 7 songs; 2 of which are brief instrumentals ("Heathen Visions" and "Unholy Orders") and 3 of which are re-recordings of tracks from the band's 2011 demo ("All Conquering Death," "The Devil's Whore," and "The Scourging Angel"). There's not much musical variation from song to song, but if you're a fan of this type of music the lack a variety probably isn't going to phase you. The important thing is that Cultfinder keep it filthy, hateful, and diabolical throughout the EP.

The songs on Hell's Teeth are relentless in their intensity. Buzzsaw guitars threaten to rend the your flesh while d-beat drumming pummels you into a blackend, bruised pulp. All the while lead singer Rob Belial screams and croaks at you about His Satanic Majesty. Cultfinder don't do nuance well; the band is a club spiked with rusty nails rather than a scalpel. But subtlety isn't what you're looking for if you've read this far and are still interested. So what if "Morbid Breed" and "Drink To The Devil" sort of sound the same? Who cares if "The Devil's Whore" is more than 5 minutes long and basically repeats the first minute of the song over and over again? Cultfinder aren't trying to drop any philosophy on you and they're not trying to revolutionize extreme metal. They're trying to start a riot and this is the soundtrack.

Hell's Teeth is available for purchase now through Eldritch Lunar Miasma Records or Cultfinder's Bandcamp page.
