Quick Review: DECOHERENCE Decoherence

When Stallagh released Projekt Misanthropia in 2007, it generated quite a stir. Allegedly made from the screams of mental patients, the album sparked repulsion in some, morbid curiosity in others. No matter what someone’s opinion might have been, one thing was for certain—controversy was a prominent selling point. The identities of the band members were completely shrouded in secrecy. Needless to say, this only drew more interest. After all, the unknown appeals to our sensibilities.

Fast-forward to 2019 and the self-titled EP from Decoherence. While not as abrasive as Stallagh, it’s just as intriguing. With no knowledge of who’s behind the curtain, it seems the wizard is intent on keeping their secret. Anonymity is almost impossible these days, especially with social media being as prominent as it is. Decoherence have emerged from the primordial and delivered something desperately needed. In short, they live up to their name in every sense of the word. Dissonant and atmospheric, the listening experience is that of detachment, allowing one to be swept up in the chaos.

While the EP only consists of two songs (named “I” and “II” respectively), they’re both examples of quality surpassing quantity. The combination of black metal, drone, and multilayered tracking allow the material to flow seamlessly from start to finish. Fans of Leviathan and Portal will naturally gravitate towards this release, as it’s cut from a similar cloth. Black metal continues to be pulled in directions that stray from its core ingredients of rhythm and atmosphere. Not only is this release indicative of what other groups should strive for; it feels like a sip of a cocktail that’s both lethal and desired. We’re ready for what comes next.

Score: 9/10
