CD Review: WEREGOAT Unholy Exaltation of Fullmoon Perversity

Weregoat may be from Portland but they want no fucking part of that "Cascadian black metal" shit. Featuring Kevin Schreutelkamp, drummer of Ritual Necromancy, here playing bass and singing as Nocturnal Hellfuker (apparently he doesn't realize that without the "c" it's pronounced "hell-FOOK-er"… or maybe he does), Weregoat wallow in the same kind of filthy production and atavistic influences as Ritual Necromancy but take a more subdued, arguably more evil-sounding approach in the process.

Ambiance is provided exclusively by the chasmal production – everything and the kitchen sink issuing forth from deep inside the abyss – but "Invoke the Black Oblivion", for instance, channels dread and foreboding with it's stretched out, dissonant riffs, while something like "Nuclear Cunt" just comes straight at you with its reverberant belch. In the interests of diversity, "Nocturnal Hunt" presents its bludgeoning sense of ill will within the framework of – hey! – a recognizable central riff.

In the space of 25 minutes Weregoat ply an ever shifting panorama of black metal sounds, but really it's that enveloping production that sells this shit. I'm not an engineering guy so I have no idea whether this was recorded to a 4-track or a 64-track, but whichever it was you can sleep easy knowing that the threesome that is Weregoat ritually sodomized every channel they could get their diseased hands on.

Unholy Exaltation of Fullmoon Perversity is out now on Dark Descent.
