With sites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo giving artists a way to fund projects directly from the fans, labels seem to be putting less money into bands. It's understandable since no one pays for music anymore, but still I have seen quite a few signed bands fund tours, album production, studio time, etc. It's sort of sad. However, The Ocean have decided to skip the middleman of the internet and crowdsource for something that is an absolute necessity on the road. BOOZE!
Last Friday the band kicked off their Summer Slaughter trek with The Dillinger Escape Plan, Revocation, Animals as Leaders, and the rest. In a genius move Ocean mastermind Robin Staps posted this on the band's Facebook page.
If you are an avid reader of all things Metal Injection, you may have caught my intro to this week's Weekly Injection where I recount taking them up on the offer in San Francisco. If you aren't for some fucked up reason, I got a sweet shirt of a squid fighting a whale and the new album, Pelagial, for a bottle of Jack Daniels and two bottles of Coke. Well worth it.
The band went on to post this on their page yesterday, and seem to be pretty set on alcohol for the rest of Summer Slaughter.
Remember though, food and alcohol are finite, so you might be able to strike up a deal somewhere along the way. The Ocean is sure to run out of both somewhere along the way.
Whether or not you can make a deal with Staps, you should certainly check out The Ocean and all the other bands on the remainder of Summer Slaughter.
