California's Wreck & Reference aren't a band that's easy to categorize. They combine aspects of industrial, drone, noise, hardcore, and black metal into an auditory morass that, somehow, works surprisingly well. No Youth, the band's debut full-length, was released last year on The Flenser Records after the label decided to carry them based solely on the strength of the band's demo, called simply, Black Cassette. Now the duo are back with a two song 7-inch called Content (pronounced No Content).
For Content, Wreck & Reference eschew the use of all stringed instruments and utilize only vocals, drums, and a Korg sampler to create two tracks that, while sparse, are as hauntingly compelling as anything they've released previously. The release date is May 21, but you can pre-order Content from The Flenser right now. You can also hear both tracks from the 7-inch ahead of time thanks to Teh Interwebz. Stereogum just premiered the b-side of the 7-inch, titled "Abhorrence", and NPR posted the official video for the a-side, titled "Absurdities & Echoes" back in April. Below you can watch the video which involves people in a chair and some broken glass. That's really the best description I can come up with so…yeah. Enjoy!
