Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is a man of few words when he's on stage performing with TOOL. But he took some time during the band's Boston Calling gig to make a statement about Memorial Day.
Maynard, who is a veteran of the United States Army, and also attended military school, took a moment between songs to pay tribute to veterans. Radio station WZLX was there and noted that Maynard, in full a riot gear getup (similar to the above photo), said this:
As artists, we interpret and report, that’s our job. We are merchants of emotion. We have the privilege to do that because of active and former law enforcement and military defending our right to do so.
Those of you who are law enforcement and military, your job is to defend our right to act like whining, entitled snowflake assholes, myself being one. Snowflakes, your job is to respect them fucking doing that for you. Divided we fall. Don’t believe the hype dumb-dumbs, we’re all in this together.
As with many things Maynard says, it's not easy to interpret what's sarcastic and what's sincere. Obviously, he's being sincere about respecting authority. The "snowflake" comment seems like a sarcastic one, as he turns it on himself, perhaps using a term others created to describe his people against them?
Maynard doesn't shy away from political statements, having previously said some unfavorable things about Donald Trump.
Either way, still no new Tool album yet, and none coming this year.
